FRIENDS AFAR & MEMENTOS

By Jennifer T.

During our recent holiday in London, we relaxed with friends Fiona and Pablo (from the UK), at The American Bar inside the historic Stafford Hotel in the West End.  It's a quirky, old money, boys' club type of place, and we loved it.  The cocktails are unique - The White Mouse, Stafford's Garden & Spitfire -- all named after a special London Stafford story.  Be sure to ask when you place your order.

The bar was re-named The American Bar in the 1930's to attract visitors from the States.  We heard that it was where American soldiers congregated during the war.

The story also goes that the walls of the bar were once so bare that a guest gave the head barman a carving of an American eagle.  And this was soon followed by an Eskimo, and then a Kangaroo (gifted by an Australian).  Today, every wall and surface is crammed with photos and mementos donated over the years, including us.

WISHING WALL IN NYC

By Jennifer T.

It's time to be hopeful for what's to come in 2017.  In New York City, people from everywhere write their wishes for the new year on pieces of official Times Square New Year's Eve confetti.  The wishes are added to over a ton of confetti that will float down at midnight.

We can't be in NYC to ring in 2017 but thanks to family members who are, wishes made by them especially for us will be released for all the world to see!

THE THIRD SATURDAY IN OCTOBER

By Jennifer T.

Football is a religion in the South.  It's on display every Saturday in stadiums from Tennessee to Texas.  But the third Saturday in October means one thing - Alabama vs. Tennessee.  The rivalry has a rich history, spanning 115 years.  The record books say the first meeting was 1901.

Never mind that the game hasn't been played on the third Saturday in October since 2012.  And Tennessee hasn't beaten Alabama since 2006.  For us, it is the game that defines each season.  It's always a game that matters.   And it's a great excuse to get together with 102,455 of your closest friends.

Game day begins with tailgating.  An all-day ritual.  Makeshift living rooms under a tent, complete with floral arrangements and flat-screen TVs.   And of course, food & beverages.  As we make the short walk from Circle Park to the stadium, we remember to glance up at the Torchbearer for good luck.

When our beloved Vols run through the T formed by the Pride of the Southland Marching Band, we know "it's football time in Tennessee."  This tradition dates back to 1965.  We think it's the best entrance in college football.

On this Saturday, Alabama played like the team they are - the #1 team in the nation.  Despite the loss, it's still "great to be a Tennessee Vol."

OPENING WEEKEND AT KEENELAND WITH GARDEN & GUN

By Jennifer T.

I never had a love of horses growing up, but I was hooked on thoroughbred racing as soon as I moved to the Bluegrass State.  Before my husband & I married, we took a day-trip to Keeneland.  I wanted to share my love of the sport with him.

Keeneland opened in Lexington, Kentucky in 1936 and was always meant to be a special place - one that symbolizes the best in thoroughbred racing.   Each April and October, the nation's best owners, trainers and jockeys come here to compete.  American Pharoah followed up on his Triple Crown victory with a win at Keeneland last October in the 2015 Breeder's Cup, breaking the track record in the process.

This October, we attended a cocktail brunch hosted by Garden & Gun.  Located on the grounds at Keeneland, Keene Place is one of the oldest buildings (circa. 1805) in Central Kentucky and is full of history & genteel charm.  Perfect location for pre-race festivities!  By the end of the day, we had lost most of the money we came with but given its proximity to Knoxville, Keeneland is a regular destination for us.  We'll be back to try our luck again.

Always bet on #4.
